Abstract

|
The purpose of present article was to review such factors on the pathogenesis, mechanisms, clinical symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for the inferior alveolar nerve damage occurred during implant placement. Literature was selected through a search of PubMed electronic databases. The keywords used for search inferior alveolar nerve injury with implant, treatment of inferior alveolar nerve injury with implant. The search was restricted to English language articles, published from January 1999 to September 2014. Using the electronic database search with key word, 72 articles were searched. Considered relevant to the topic after title and / or abstract screening, 28 articles were selected. Full texts of these 28 articles were evaluated and 8 articles were selected using eligibility criteria.
The inferior alveolar nerve injury during implant surgery is most common and associated with clinical and medico-legal problem. Clinician should recognize and exclude etiological factors leading to nerve injury. Proper presurgery planning, timely diagnosis and treatment are the key to avoid nerve sensory disturbances management. All patients prior to implant surgery should be aware of the damage to the inferior alveolar nerve and the agreement must be created unconditionally.
